TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has joined 23 countries in a joint statement strongly condemning Israel's attacks on Iran that have been ongoing since June 13, 2025. The statement, initiated by Egypt, marks a strong regional solidarity amidst unprecedented escalation of Middle East conflict.

The coalition of 23 countries includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, and Somalia. Additionally, it involves Algeria, Djibouti, Comoros, Chad, Gambia, Mauritania, and Brunei Darussalam. In the statement made on June 17 and released online, including on the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, they unanimously reject Israel's military aggression, considered a violation of international law.

The statement urges the establishment of a Nuclear Weapons and Mass Destruction Weapons-Free Zone in the Middle East. This proposal applies to all countries in the region without exception, in line with relevant international resolutions.

The coalition of 24 countries also stresses the urgency for all Middle Eastern countries to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), expressing serious concerns about the potential nuclear arms race in the region.

The statement emphasizes the importance of not targeting nuclear facilities under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supervision. Such actions are deemed violations of international law and international humanitarian law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions.

This is relevant as Israel has targeted several Iranian facilities related to its civilian nuclear program, raising international concerns about radiological consequences.

The signatory countries affirm that diplomacy, dialogue, and the adherence to good neighborliness principles in accordance with international law and the UN Charter remain the only viable path to resolving the crisis in the region.

They emphasize that military measures cannot bring sustainable resolutions to the ongoing crisis, while urging the return to negotiations as the only way to achieve a sustainable agreement regarding Iran's nuclear program.

The coalition is extremely worried about this dangerous escalation, which could have serious consequences for the peace and stability of the entire region. They urge the immediate cessation of Israeli hostilities towards Iran and de-escalation efforts to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire.

The statement also emphasizes the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in international waters in accordance with relevant international laws, and refraining from actions that undermine maritime security.

This joint statement reflects global concerns regarding the conflict that has the potential to drag a wider area into instability. It involves countries from North Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East.

This diplomatic move demonstrates the efforts of Muslim and Arab countries to seek peaceful solutions amidst increasing geopolitical tensions involving major world powers.
