James O'Connor faces the disappointment of missing out against the British and Irish Lions, as he has been omitted from the Australia squad set to take on Fiji.

The 34 year old fly-half, widely tipped for a return to Joe Schmidt's fold for the upcoming Lions series starting on July 19 in Brisbane, did not make the cut as Schmidt has opted to go with Ben Donaldson, Noah Lolesio, and Tom Lynagh for the number 10 role in the warm-up Test slated for July 6.

The 36-man Wallabies squad features two uncapped players: Western Force back-rower Nick Champion de Crespigny and Brumbies winger Corey Toole.

David Porecki makes a return for the first time since leading Australia at the World Cup last year, while La Rochelle's Will Skelton, another former captain, stands out as the sole player plying his trade abroad to join the squad.

Schmidt gave insight into the selection process: "Selection is always tight and there'll be players who are excited and those that are disappointed."

He also remarked on the coaching discussions, stating: "As coaches, there was a lot of healthy, robust discussion and we think we've selected a group that will work hard and connect well as a squad."

Moreover, Schmidt highlighted the blend within the team, mentioning: "There's some continuity from last year, plus a few new or returning players, who have forced their way into the mix through strong performances in Super Rugby Pacific."

Looking ahead, Schmidt emphasised the team's focus, declaring: "This squad's immediate focus is Fiji, and we will need to hit the ground running having not been together since early January."
