Virat Kohli Reveals The Reason Behind His T20I Retirement, Says ‘It Was Taken Purely Understanding That There Is…’

Even though Virat has retired from the T20Is his form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is still top-notch. He currently the third leading run-scorer in IPL 2025 with 443 runs in 10 matches at an average of 63.28.

Virat Kohli announced his T20I retirement after India won the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Kohli ended his T20I career as India’s second highest leading run-scorer in the format just behind Rohit Sharma. He had scored 4188 runs at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04. In a podcast posted by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Virat Kohli opened up about his decision to retire from the T20Is.

“I do not think things have changed for me in any way. The decision (to leave T20Is) was taken purely understanding that there is a new set of players who are more than ready and they need time, they need a 2-year cycle to evolve, handle pressure, play in different parts of the world, and play enough games to the point where when the World Cup comes, they feel like they are ready,” he concluded.

Nothing has changed for Virat Kohli even after his retirement from T20Is, he also spoke about the love he has received from fans and his loyalty towards RCB. “The love that I have received from the fans, I do not think any silverware or any trophy can come close to that,” he added.
