West Brom have confirmed that they have been unsuccessful in their bid to get Ireland midfielder Jayson Molumby’s red card overturned.
The Championship side launched an appeal after Molumby was sent off during Tuesday’s Championship defeat to Bristol City.
Molumby was dismissed in the second-half of the Baggies’ 2-1 defeat for a foul on Joe Williams, which happened right in front of referee Mathew Donohue.
The Championship outfit quickly submitted a claim of ‘wrongful dismissal’, with television replays suggesting that contact between Molumby and Williams was minimal.
However, the outcome of the appeal came as little surprise to those who had read former Premier League referee Keith Hackett’s view of the challenge.
Molumby connected with a raised boot and Hackett told West Brom News: “The referee was in a very good position to see the serious foul play offence and correctly issued a red card to Jayson Molumby.
“Serious foul play is a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality.
“Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.”
West Brom issued a statement on Friday confirming the outcome of their appeal - and the fact that the Waterford native must now serve a three-game ban.
It read: “Albion have been unsuccessful in their appeal against the red card shown to Jayson Molumby in Tuesday’s game at Bristol City.
“The 25-year-old will now serve a three-game suspension and is next available for the Sky Bet Championship fixture with Cardiff City on Saturday, April 26.”
Molumby has received 10 yellow cards in 36 Championship games so far this season.
He wasn’t included in Heimir Hallgrímsson’s squad for last month’s Nations League play-off against Bulgaria, as the two yellow cards he picked up in last year’s campaign meant he was suspended for the first-leg.
